When Ralph Steadman met Hunter S. Thompson in 1969, it was the start of a decades-long artistic partnership. Together, the maverick illustrator and madcap writer would birth the ‘gonzo’ style of journalism, a new form of intensely personal reportage, and collaborate on the iconic Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas.
Between political cartoons, picture books, cover art, and countless pieces for Rolling Stone, Steadman also illustrated a string of literary classics, including Alice in Wonderland, Animal Farm, Treasure Island, and Fahrenheit 451. His distinct visual style, characterized by manic ink splatters and grotesque caricatures, has made him one of the most popular, and instantly recognizable, illustrators of his time.
